Global Mentoring Walk 2015

GMW_general

Geraldine Laybourne, founder and former CEO of Oxygen media (the mother company of Nickelodeon) when asked to mentor, found that her busy schedule didn’tallow it. Instead of rejecting meeting requests, she called these interested and upcoming women to join her in her morning walks every day. This started a movement now called the Mentoring Walk.

Vital Voices (Largest international non-governmental organization supporting women’s participation in economic development) solicits key members of its Global Leadership Network to organize Global Women’s Mentoring Walks. Each year, this initiative includes a series of mentoring walk events occurring on the same day in various countries across the globe.

Biz Divas believes very strongly in the power of mentoring. Along with knowledge partner Vital Voices, we organize Global Mentoring Walk every year in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Each year in every city, close to 100 enterprising women from corporate as well as business world walk together and share their journeys and insights. The walk is culminated in a plenary session or an interactive talk led by exemplary women leaders.

The purpose of Global Mentoring Walk is:

  • To value women’s participation in society.
  • To recognize the importance of “paying it forward” by giving back to others in the community.
  • To promote lasting mentoring relationships between emerging and established women leaders.
  • To demonstrate a belief in the importance of women’s leadership & participation in society.
  • To instill the values of mentoring in rising leaders who can give back to future generations.
  • Provide aspiring women students & professionals with the support & guidance they need to fulfill their goals.

A mentoring walk convenes established women leaders and emerging women leaders to walk together in their community. As they walk, they engage in discussion regarding their professional challenges and successes to establish a mentoring relationship in which the seasoned leader guides, advises and supports their peer.

We call upon women at the peak of their careers; women who have learnt plenty in their lives and are willing to share virtuous lessons with the upcoming generation of women leaders to join in the walk as mentors. The mentors are accomplished women who understand the importance of women’s leadership and participation in society; are motivated to instill the value of mentoring in rising leaders; have 15 years and above experience in politics, business, civil society, academia or another field and have sufficient professional experience and expertise to feel confident in sharing experiences and insights into their professional field.

The Global Mentoring Walk aims to establish camaraderie, creates gender-friendly environments, promotes a stronger environment for women’s success, and expands horizons for further personal growth as you explore innovative leadership strategies.

Dear Biz Divas, Thank you so much for inviting me to be part of the Global Mentoring Walk today. It was really an amazing experience to be able to interact and share my thoughts with many like minded women. The venue and the climate in the morning was like an icing on the cake. Wanted to thank the team specially for arranging to get Apurva to speak. .. totally enjoyed every bit of her talk with all her chirpy anecdotes and childlike enthusiasm. I started reading the book on my way back itself and I was laughing alone in the train. …. its indeed a book every woman can identify with!

Thanks once again Bizdivas and all the women leaders present today. ~ Sangeeta Acharya, Associate Vice President, Financial Planning & Analysis  (FP&A) at STAR India Pvt Ltd
